In order to encourage and engage children into talking freely about painful issues, we need to use verbal counselling skills in conjunction with other strategies. The use of different media to involve the child in play therapy; including sand tray, puppets, miniature animals and art – can provide the child with creative ways to communicate their stories.
Kate has over 15 years experience of working with children, initially Montessori trained; she has taught children aged between 3-11 in Pre-Prep and P/T Drama Schools in the UK and Cyprus. Her Classes have included Early Years Drama, Reception Class and Sports Camps in International School settings. At Place2Be, a UK Charity, Kate volunteered as a counsellor for primary aged children in play therapy – who presented with issues including; anxiety, low self-esteem, bereavement, domestic violence, self-harm and abuse.
Originally influenced by Geldard & Geldard (1997) SPICC Model, Kate has expanded on this, creating her own model she calls SPRICT (Sequentially Planned Relational Integrative Children’s Therapy) weaving Mindfulness techniques together with the Gestalt, Person-Centred and Narrative aspects of her approach.
